Connecting Outlook with RPC Over HTTP Fails

Microsoft Exchange Server has a mechanism to store a copy of your Exchange Server mailbox locally on client hard drive in the form of OST (Offline Storage Table) file. This option is available only if you configure Exchange Server in the Cached Exchange Mode. When you connect to Exchange Server, the OST file is automatically converted into PST (Personal Storage Table) file and new mails from Exchange Mailbox are downloaded to it. The OST to PST conversion takes place after Outlook synchronizes with Microsoft Exchange Server.

However, in some situations, you can not connect with Exchange Server and access data from Exchange Server mailbox. When you attempt to use Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 or Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 for connecting over Internet to Exchange Server mailbox on MS Exchange Server 2003-based system, it prompts you for the logon credentials several times. Finally you can not connect with the server and update your OST file.

Grounds of the problem

This behavior of Microsoft Outlook occurs if outbound proxy authentication is needed, and if you are using RPC (Remote Procedure Call) over HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) for connecting to Exchange Server 2003 account. When MS Outlook uses RPC of the HTTP, default timeout of email client is 45 seconds. The connection may get terminated if RPC over HTTP needs more than 45 seconds for connecting. In such cases, OST PST conversion fails.

Resolution

In order to sort out this problem, you need to add ConnectTimeout, ConnectTimeoutLow, and RFRTimeoutDWORD values to RPC registry. Go through the underwritten steps to do so:

OST File Becomes Unusable After Merging Exchange Server Mailbox
